The Avengers
Evidently he's in final negotiations to direct (and probably co-write) the massive, massive Avengers flick Marvel Films has been prepping and anticipating for years.

That's fucking pressure.

I don't really know Joss Whedon's stuff that well (except for his writing credit on Toy Story) but I hear he's got a better-than-good grip on team dynamics in his films and comics. Which is exactly what an Avengers flick would be.

It could have been a lot worse, I think. I was holding out for the absolutely-impossible scenario of James Cameron to direct, but this could still be rad. I just CAN'T see Chris Evans (the douchey frat douche as Human Torch in Fantastic 4....but also he was good in Sunshine) as Captain America. In a standalone Cap film, sure, but can you really see that baby-faced party dude leading Robert Downey Jr? And tentatively Edward Norton? I can't.

Yeah, I can't see him as Steve Rogers, Edward Norton as Bruce Banner could wipe the floor with him.

You know, I was actually warm to the idea of John Krasynkssyskskski or whatever as Cap. He's got a good face for it, and he can actually act.

You know whose name was being bandied about that I LOVED? John Hamm, from Mad Men. Look at homeboys fucking JAWLINE:

That's fuckin Captain America right there. And no homo intended even though it's homo as shit, but he's a good lookin' man. AND he could hold his own against superb actors like Norton and RDJ.

Re: Joss Whedon to direct The Avengers?
Whedon does well with an ensemble cast, is a good writer and his characters do feel "real". He could use some success too. I think he'd be a great choice if he was passionate about the material, but he's not. He's passionate about the X-Men but went on record in the past saying he didn't want to do The Avengers. He could easily handle it but it would be more about a payday and studio cred.
Quote:Back in 2005, Whedon was asked this question by In Focus. Whedon responded: \"The thing about the X-Men is they have a coherent core. The Avengers to me is tough. I wouldn't approach The Avengers, I wouldn't approach the Fantastic Four. The X-Men are all born of pain, and pain is where I hang my hat.\"

this is the closest I could find to an Avengers thread, edit the title to "The Avengers" and we have a winner.
